TournamentRookie Rumble 2.5 Bracket, Final

Kenji S. Survived the Final. He Did Not Survive His Brother’s High-Five

Jun T. and Kenji S. beat Leif A. and Nadia R. 11–9, 11–13, 12–10 to win the Rookie Rumble 2.5 final, then one of them hurt himself celebrating.

Halftone: Art Desk. One ray for each of the winners’ 34 points. Not to scale; neither was the celebration.

August. A dome by the water. Two newcomers pick up paddles and swear they will rule the 2.5 bracket. Leif A. does not know what the kitchen is. Nadia R. does not believe in a correct service side. They are reckless. They are unpredictable. They are, by the end of the day, the runners-up. In the Rookie Rumble 2.5 Bracket Final at Tidewater Sports Dome, brothers Jun T. and Kenji S. took them down 2 games to 1: 11–9, 11–13, 12–10.

Game 1 was a car chase through a fruit market. Every serve sent produce flying. Jun T. and Kenji S. got out clean, 11–9. Then the villains struck back. Nadia R. served from the WRONG SIDE. Twice. Nobody noticed. She won both points anyway. Rules are for people who started in July. Leif A. and Nadia R. stole Game 2, 13–11, and the dome went silent except for one squeaking sneaker.

Somewhere in Game 3, Leif A. learned the kitchen exists. Enemy territory. Seven feet of no-volley doom. He had been camping in it since August like it was a timeshare. Slow motion: a volley, a sneaker on the line, his partner’s face doing the math. In a world where nobody reads the rulebook, one man finally got the memo. During the final.

10–10. The rooftop showdown. Kenji S. drops it soft. Leif A. lunges. The ball meets the net in a massive EXPLOSION, which is to say a polite little thwap, and dies on his side. 11–10. Jun T. punches a volley through the middle. 12–10. Over. Jun T. turns to his brother: “Kitchen’s closed.”

Then came the real danger. Two brothers. One high-five. Way too much FEELING. The smack echoed off the dome. Kenji S. walked away holding a bag of ice, the only casualty of a match he won. Nadia R. vowed revenge, from whichever side of the court she felt like.

They learned the kitchen this fall. This winter, they learn the rulebook. Only at Tidewater Sports Dome: ROOKIE RUMBLE 2. Kenji S. will be celebrating with a fist bump.

Rated PG-13 for intense dinking.
