TournamentFall Classic 3.5 Bracket, Gold Medal Match

Theo W.’s $280 ‘Instrument’ Silenced by a Dink That Barely Cleared the Tape

Priya K. and Dev R. take Fall Classic 3.5 gold at Harbor Point Courts after a third game that ran to 15 and lasted 41 minutes.

Halftone: Art Desk. One ray for each of the winners’ 34 points. Not to scale; neither was the celebration.

The intelligence briefing arrived at 0700 hours and it was confident. Theo W. had acquired new hardware: a $280 carbon paddle he referred to, without irony, as ‘the instrument.’ Analysts expected it to decide the Fall Classic 3.5 Bracket Gold Medal Match at Harbor Point Courts. It did not. Priya K. and Dev R. took gold over Marisol T. and Theo W., 2 games to 1, by scores of 11–9, 8–11, 15–13. The briefing has been shredded.

Game 1 was a trench fight. Priya K. and Dev R. held the kitchen line and did very little else, which proved sufficient. Across the net, Marisol T. served as both combatant and military police. She called her own kitchen violations out loud, with a hand signal. ‘Foot. Kitchen. Mine,’ a witness on the next court reported. Nobody asked her to. It cost her unit points and earned her my respect. The game went 11–9.

In Game 2 the instrument found its tune. Theo W. swung it with the conviction of a man defending an investment. Some drives landed. Others went where flyswatters go. Marisol T. kept her feet legal and her conscience clean. They took it 11–8. The other camp reported low morale and a sudden interest in hydration.

Game 3 went past 11, past 13, and into the long grind. Forty-one minutes. Supply lines failed. Water bottles ran dry. A source on the next court said she started and finished an entire match of her own while it played out. Neither unit broke cleanly. Both broke repeatedly, then regrouped. At 14–13, Priya K. ended it with a dink so short it barely cleared the net tape. It did not land so much as surrender. Theo W. arrived with the instrument a full second late, which in this theater is a lifetime.

Dev R. then ran a lap of the court holding the bracket sheet over his head like a captured flag. Witnesses called the lap unnecessary and fully earned. The instrument has been returned to its case pending review. Gold to the unit that stayed put. Sterling, Harbor Point. End transmission.

Hold the line. Preferably from behind it.
