League PlayTuesday Night Ladder, Week 7
Saoirse D. Calls Four Lets, Wins All Four, Loses the Match Anyway
Lucía F. and Kwame O. beat Odette L. and Saoirse D. 11–7, 11–9 in Week 7 of the Tuesday Night Ladder, with a rogue balloon and a notes app as witnesses.
Elm Street Rec Center — Pickleball is a lot like a self-checkout machine. Everybody insists they know how it works, nobody agrees on what just happened, and somebody always wants a do-over. At the Elm Street Rec Center for Tuesday Night Ladder, Week 7, Lucía F. and Kwame O. scanned every item correctly and beat Odette L. and Saoirse D. in two games, 11–7 and 11–9.
Let’s talk about the lets. Saoirse D. said ‘we’ll call it a let’ four times. Four! And how many went the other team’s way? Zero. That’s not a let, that’s a coupon. By the third one, Lucía F. was walking back to the baseline before Saoirse finished the sentence, like a dog that hears the word ‘bath.’
Meanwhile Odette L. spent warmups explaining her rating to people who had not asked. Not her partner. Not her opponents. People. A guy refilling his water bottle now knows her rating, and he plays racquetball. Announcing your rating before you play is like telling the waiter you’re a food critic. Now everybody’s watching the soup. Game 1 went 11–7, and the rating did not come up again.
Across the net, Kwame O. tracked every single point in his phone’s notes app. Who does that? I’ll tell you who: a man preparing for an appeal. The score is already three numbers, which is two more than any sport needs, and Kwame wanted a fourth thing: documentation. Somewhere between his grocery list and a Wi-Fi password is the line ‘Saoirse let, again.’
Then, mid-rally in Game 2, a birthday balloon drifted in from the party in the next gym and floated onto the court. Finally, a legitimate let! Did anyone call it? No. Saoirse had used them all up. The balloon hovered over the kitchen, the only time anything festive has ever been in there. Lucía F. and Kwame O. closed it out 11–9.
Final tally: two games for the winners, four lets for Saoirse, one balloon, and one notes file Kwame has titled ‘Evidence.’ Odette L. would like you to know none of this reflects her rating. She mentioned it on the way out. To the balloon.
You’ve been great. Tip your line judge.
