ControversyClub Championship, 4.0 Quarterfinal

The Only Eyewitness Was a Water Fountain. Delphine R. Didn’t Need One

Delphine R. and Anika S. outlast Bao T. and Celeste W. 11–9, 10–12, 11–9 in a 4.0 quarterfinal saved by a replay and a shot around the post.

Halftone: Art Desk. The measurement is derived from the losers’ point total, which is about as scientific as the original call.

Brightwater Athletic Club. The Club Championship. The 4.0 Quarterfinal. Four players walked onto the court. Only two would walk into the semifinals. Delphine R. and Anika S. took down Bao T. and Celeste W. two games to one, 11–9, 10–12, 11–9, in a match with one disputed line call, one useless piece of evidence, and the longest eleven minutes in recreational sports.

Game one was a slow burn. Delphine R. and Anika S. crept through the kitchen like it was enemy territory, because in this business, it IS. Anika S. held the line with dinks so soft they needed a permission slip. 11–9. Then the counterstrike. Game two went past 10–10, every serve a ticking bomb with a red wire, a blue wire and no instructions. Bao T. and Celeste W. cut the right one. 12–10. We were going to a DECIDER.

The rooftop. Game three. 9–9. Celeste W. rises for an overhead. Slow motion. The ball comes down on the baseline. Or near the baseline. Or near the general idea of a baseline. Four players. Four opinions. Then a spectator steps forward with phone video. Hope! Justice! It was filmed vertically. It mostly showed a WATER FOUNTAIN. The fountain was in sharp focus. The fountain looked fantastic. The fountain had no comment.

Eleven minutes of debate. Two failed peace talks. One player re-tied a shoe purely for dramatic effect. The verdict: replay the point. Then Delphine R. did the unthinkable. Pulled wide, past the post, she bent the ball AROUND it, low and untouchable. Nobody saw it coming. Not Bao T. Not Celeste W. Certainly not the fountain. Delphine R. turned to a camera that did not exist. “Check the footage.” One point later, it was over. 11–9.

Bao T. and Celeste W. left vowing revenge and a strict horizontal-video policy. Delphine R. and Anika S. march on to the semifinals. But in a world where every ball is in until somebody says it’s out, a water fountain still knows the truth. Coming soon: THE LINE CALL 2: FOUNTAIN OF LIES.

Rated PG-13 for intense dinking.
