League PlayThursday Mixed League, Week 4
Idris M. Launches Erne Offensive, Captures One Net Post
Desmond K. and Felix A. take Week 4 at The Dink Tank 11–3, 11–6 by hitting the middle, a tactic the laminated card failed to anticipate.
The Dink Tank — Military historians will study Idris M.’s decision for years. Thursday Mixed League, Week 4, The Dink Tank. He committed to the erne, the flanking leap around the kitchen corner, on what witnesses estimate was every ball of game one. Ernes completed: zero. Desmond K. and Felix A. took the match two games to none, 11–3, 11–6.
The campaign was bold. It was also visible from orbit. Each time Idris broke left, his opponents simply did not hit the ball there. He pressed on regardless. On one sortie he made contact with the net post. The post held its position. It was the only thing on that side of the net that did.
Gemma L. arrived with a laminated strategy card. She studied it during timeouts with the focus of a staff officer reading a map of the wrong country. A source on the next court reports it was color-coded. Another claims the erne appeared on it, circled, with a note that read ‘sparingly.’ Intelligence suggests Idris was not briefed.
Desmond K. and Felix A. had no card. They had one order: down the middle. They followed it every rally, without discussion, without flair, and without visible thought. It worked because nobody stood in the middle. I do not admire the plan. I admire that they never abandoned it. ‘Middle,’ Felix said afterward. Asked to elaborate, he said, ‘Middle.’
Game two brought a partial withdrawal from erne operations. Idris rejoined the kitchen line, and the unit clawed back six points. Desmond and Felix answered by hitting it down the middle some more. The supply lines were too long by then. Morale had already been left by the post.
After-action report: one card laminated, one post engaged, zero ernes recovered. The middle remains undefended pending review. Sterling, out.
Hold the line. Preferably from behind it.
Editor’s note This report covers one night of league play. The rivalry, we are told, continues next week.
