In an eye-opening debut for Justin, Caden and Jim clinched a comfortable 11-6 victory against Patrick and Justin. But really, is it even a proper game if one player still thinks the paddle is a ping pong paddle on steroids?

Justin, who was coaxed into trying pickleball for the first time, found out quickly that the game isn’t just a backyard version of a tennis match. 'I thought pickleball was just a fun name for a barbecue side dish,' Justin quipped post-match, still adjusting his grip on what is apparently called a 'paddle' and not a 'bat'.

Meanwhile, Caden and Jim, the seasoned champions of the cul-de-sac, displayed their mastery in volleying between amusement and athleticism. 'We went a little easy on Justin,' Caden commented, maintaining a straight face that could rival a marble statue. 'We didn't want to scare him off the court for good.' Jim added, 'He still thinks the kitchen is where you make sandwiches.'

Patrick, Justin’s partner, couldn't help but chuckle at the rookie's struggles. 'You know you're in trouble when your teammate starts with an underhand serve and accidentally throws the paddle instead of the ball,' he reflected, trying not to sound too amused.

The crowd, consisting mainly of neighborhood enthusiasts and a few local pets, cheered on the team, occasionally offering pointers to Justin like, 'Hit the ball, not the net!'

So what's the deal with pickleball anyway? It's the only sport where you can go from beginner to expert in the same afternoon, all while questioning the functionality of a wiffle ball. Justin might have lost the game, but he certainly won a lesson in humility–and in the proper use of sports equipment.

As the sun set on the court, Justin vowed to return, promising to bring not just his A-game but also a paddle that doesn't accidentally double as a frisbee.
