League PlayWednesday Ladder, Court 3
Rocco D. Ordered Nachos Mid-Match. They Were the Only Thing on Court 3 Cooked Properly
Otis V. and Pilar M. take the Wednesday Ladder 11–5, 11–7 on one shared water bottle while Sunny K.’s third-shot drop stays a work in progress.
The Kitchen Sink Social Club — Game 1 arrives at my table like a starter nobody bothered to season, and the bill reads 11–5. I send it back. The main lands at 11–7, and that is dinner. Otis V. and Pilar M. beat Rocco D. and Sunny K. two games to none on Court 3 of the Wednesday Ladder at The Kitchen Sink Social Club. A club named after the sink, and the losers still threw in everything except a decent drop.
Court 3 sits beside the bar’s fryer vent, so the whole service smelled like oil working a double shift. Fine. Ambience. But Rocco D. ORDERED NACHOS. Mid-match. Then ate them at changeovers like the ladder was a buffet. Rocco, you are ON THE LINE. Your hand belongs on a paddle, not on a jalapeno. Every dink afterwards slid into the net like cheese off a soggy chip.
Then there’s Sunny K., who announced four separate times, FOUR, that the third-shot drop is a work in progress. That is not a dish. That is a ticket nobody ever fired. The drops sailed long, sailed high, and one landed so deep it needed a reservation. If it’s still in progress, keep it in the walk-in. Do not plate it in front of guests.
Meanwhile, Otis V. and Pilar M. shared ONE water bottle all night “for efficiency.” Two cooks, one bottle. I’ve seen better hydration in a forgotten brisket. And yet. Late in game two, Pilar M. took a floating Rocco D. return and put it on the pass at Sunny K.’s feet: clean, hot, finished. Otis V. called “behind” on the switch and actually moved. Communication. Mise en place. I almost smiled. That point was beautiful. Don’t tell them I said so.
Was it great? No. Was it acceptable? Yes. ACCEPTABLE. Otis V. and Pilar M. keep their station on the ladder. Rocco D., 86 the nachos. Sunny K., keep working that drop, and next time somebody asks, the answer is “yes, chef,” not a progress report. Now get out of my kitchen, and turn off that fryer vent on your way out.
Service is over. Now get out of my kitchen.
Editor’s note This report covers one night of league play. The rivalry, we are told, continues next week.
