TournamentMasters 60+ Invitational, Semifinal
Yusuf B.’s Third-Shot Drive Delivered Twice to the Parking Lot. Nobody Ordered It
Esperanza V. and Walt H. plated soft drops and lobs to win 11–6, 11–8 in the semifinal while Mateo C. and Yusuf B. ran every burner on high.
Saguaro Flats Racquet Club — There was one moment. One. Late in the second game at Saguaro Flats Racquet Club, Esperanza V. lifted a lob so delicate it floated over two outstretched paddles and settled on the baseline like a poached egg landing on toast. I put my hand on my heart. I nearly sent a thank-you note. Then I remembered the rest of service: Esperanza V. and Walt H. beat Mateo C. and Yusuf B. 11–6, 11–8 in the Masters 60+ Invitational semifinal, and I have NEVER seen a station on fire like that.
Mateo C. and Yusuf B. cooked every single ball on maximum flame. Every dink, every reset, every gentle little ball that was BEGGING to be finessed, they smashed like they were tenderizing a steak with a frying pan. They called it “applying pressure.” That is not pressure, gentlemen. That is burning the sauce and blaming the stove.
And Yusuf B. Oh, Yusuf. Your third-shot drive cleared the fence and went into the parking lot. TWICE. Two plates, fired straight past the pass, out the back door and into a car park. Who is eating out there? A hatchback? “Applying pressure, Chef!” Yes, to the windshields. Mateo C., meanwhile, stood behind him nodding like a sous chef who has also never once turned the heat down.
Now, the winners. Esperanza V. and Walt H. ran soft drops and lobs all day, with mise en place so tidy I could eat off their baseline. Was it flashy? No. Was it seasoned? Barely. Was it acceptable? Yes. Acceptable, which in my kitchen is practically a standing ovation. Walt H. even brought a cooler of orange slices and offered them to the opponents at every changeover. Front-of-house hospitality, mid-match, while beating them. Diabolical. Lovely. I want him on my staff.
The verdict: Esperanza V. and Walt H. keep their stations and move on to the final. Mateo C. and Yusuf B., 86 the third-shot drive, report to the dink station, and somebody please go collect those balls from the parking lot. Yes, Chef? YES, CHEF.
Service is over. Now get out of my kitchen.
